Did you know that Karna, one of the most quintessential and controversial characters of the Mahabharata has a story, which is related to Mahalaya?
It is believed in some myths that after Karna went to heaven, Indra offered him gold – to eat. A flustered Karna asked him as to how he can have gold!
Indra replied by saying that while he was on Earth, he had not offered any food to his ancestors, but had given gold and silver as offerings.
So, Karna then pointed it out to him by saying that he didn’t know who his ancestors were, since Karna had found out much later that Kunti is his birth mother.
Indra took pity on him and sent him back to Earth for 15 days so that he could complete his offerings to his ancestors, which he did.
This period of 15 days is known as Pitri Paksha and Mahalaya marks the 15th day, when people offer prayers to their ancestors through a ritual, popularly known as tarpan.
Interesting, right? So, this Mahalaya, let’s stay at home and reminiscence about the various stories associated with it!
