Dr Sushovan Banerjee, better known as “Ek takar daktar” (One Rupee Doctor) just received the Padma Shri Award for his contribution towards society. It is the fourth most prestigious national award in India and after receiving it, this humble and noble man dedicated it to his patients.
Doctor Sushovan went on to say that his patients are the reason why he kept his services going and he will always be there for their needs. So what are these services and how did it all begin?
Banerjee studied medicine from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata and completed his Masters in Pathology from Calcutta University. He then went on to complete a diploma in Haematology from London. After working for four years in London, he gave in to his eternal calling to serve the poor of his native land.
He came back to his hometown, Bolpur, a village in the Birbhum district of West Bengal and started practising medicine there. What caught public attention and picked up mileage was the fact that he charged only 1 rupee from all his economically backward patients.
This selfless and dedicated doctor has been treating patients for the past 57 years and never has he faltered in his line of medical ethics. His efforts finally bore recognition when the Indian government awarded him with the Padma Shri Award, this year.
After receiving the award, Banerjee said on a happy note that the former President Pranab Mukherjee called him to congratulate him as they share very friendly terms. This benevolent doctor was overwhelmed by this response from his friend and dedicated his award to his patients.
We salute you for your good work, Dr Banerjee!
