It was in June that the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicked off and it drew to a perfect end on 7th July after 25 days.
Lost in the hullabaloo of the International Men’s Cricket World Cup, the FIFA Women’s World Cup came and went and we missed out on a series of good games!
So who won the 8th edition of this World Cup?
Last year’s winners, the United States Women's National team, hoisted the cup again on Sunday! The final hosted at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in France, saw the women in white lifting the cup, for the second time in a row! They beat Netherlands with a straight 2-0 win.
Megan Rapinoe scored the first goal with a penalty kick and Rose Lavelle scored the second one. Rapinoe was also awarded the Golden Ball, honouring her as the top player of the entire series.
Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York City announced that the team will receive a ticker tape parade in the city’s prestigious “Canyon of Heroes”. Both the American President, Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump took to Twitter to congratulate the team on their glorious win.
Our heartiest congratulations to the winners and may FIFA Women’s World Cup take the center stage soon!
