Ecosystems around the world are threatened. With a massive rate of deforestation having taken a grip on our lives, the ones who stand to face extinction amidst all this, are not just the animals that roam or the plants that grow today, but we humans as well! We survive and thrive in harmony and hence if even a single plant or animal gets affected, we get affected in the long term.
We all know that greenhouse effect is one of the major reasons behind pollution, which is a great threat to our ecosystem. But did you know what contributes to15% of Greenhouse gas emission? It’s deforestation. We have been clearing lands to make it more habitable for us but that has been unbalancing our ecosystem to a great extent.
So a couple from Brazil decided to take a small step, which made a huge change! Photographer Sebastião Salgado came back home to Brazil during the 1990s after an assignment and was shocked to find that a part of his native land was almost barren. Lush greenery was replaced by brown dust.
Sebastião knew something had to be done and so he and his wife, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado teamed up to do their bit for Mother Nature. They founded a small but effective organization Instituto Terra, which started planting saplings, about 4 million of them, almost 20 years ago. Today this barren land is covered by trees and is home to more than 293 plant species, 172 bird species, 33 mammal species, 15 reptile species and 15 amphibian species.
A small gesture of planting trees, led by a couple, brought back life to a barren piece of land. Our environment is in danger and our ecosystem stands threatened and so do we! In a world where technological innovations steal the limelight, work for Mother Nature needs to be highlighted as well. Do your part and spread the greenispiration!
