There are people who are working day and night to for a better tomorrow and we hardly know about them! Well, thanks to CNN's Top 10 Heroes Of 2019, Mumbai-based Afroz Shah and his efforts came into light.
Who’s Afroz Shah?
Well, professionally Shah is a lawyer, practising in Mumbai, but he is a passionately driven crusader for the environment. He has been clearing the beaches of Mumbai for quite some time now and that helped him to feature in CNN’s top heroes of 2019.
For Shah it all began in 2015. He began a foundation, supported by his neighbor and began clearing up the Versova Beach in Mumbai. It has been estimated that in three years, Shah and his foundation managed to clear out 20 million kilogrammes of garbage from the beach! It was termed as the “world’s biggest beach clean-up” by environment arm of the United Nations. And that’s not all – Shah still has a volunteer from his foundation, checking up on the private company which has a contract of keeping the beach clean.
Mithi River in Mumbai has turned into an 18Km long sewage which was one of the main reasons why the city overflowed with garbage during the Mumbai floods. Shah is currently working on clearing the waste from this river.
Operating under his founded Afroz Shah Foundation; Shah has a strong team of volunteers too who are equally enthused about working towards a cleaner Mumbai.
Congratulations Afroz Shah on your prestigious accomplishment and our heart-felt gratitude to you for your lovely initiative!
