We all know about the woman behind The Boy With A Scar, but how many of us remember her rags to riches story? So, on Harry Potter’s birthday (31st July, remember?), let’s wander back into the life of his creator – J.K. Rowling.
It is a well-known fact that Rowling had conceived the plot and character of Harry Potter quite early in her life, but it was not easy for her to pen it down.
When she did start writing it, she faced a tumultuous period in her life as her mother passed away. Seeking solace, she went to teach in Portugal for a year. When she did return, her marriage had fallen apart and she was left alone with a baby daughter.
Battling depression and unemployment, while raising her daughter, the only relief Rowling had in her life was writing. She started to write and when she was done with the first book, she sent it across to numerous publishers.
She received a total of 12 downright rejections. It was not easy. She was on the verge of giving up, when Bloomsbury Publishing decided to publish the book. Why? The editor’s 8 year old daughter loved the first chapter and wanted to know more!
And out came her first book and the rest as they say, is history!
Rowling’s story is truly one of the magic of perseverance.
