A healthy mind is essential for a healthy body. So, this World Mental Health Day, take a step, not just towards a healthy body, but a healthy mind as well.
Every year, the World Health Organization, assigns a particular theme to World Mental Health Day and this year, their focus is on preventing suicide.
Suicide rates are quite high in India and there are various factors that lead to it – from peer pressure to societal complications, low self-esteem to poverty, the range is quite a large one. Suicide is something that does not happen overnight, it is the culmination of deteriorating mental health.
How can we work towards better mental health for ourselves and those around us? Here are some measures which we can take:
Learn to channelize your frustration. Frustration, is one of the main reasons, that leads to a unhealthy state of mind. So, learn to identify this feeling and engage yourself in activities like working out, dancing, music etc. which will help you to distract yourself and get some positive output from your efforts.
If you are not feeling fine, a little down and cannot pin point the reason behind it and if this continues for a period of time, then it is a sign that you are depressed. Do not fret. Visit a mental health practitioner and talk it out. This will definitely help.
If you are feeling very lonely or are trying to cope with something, join support groups. For example, if you are dealing with alcohol addiction, then join a support group that helps people become sober. This will help you to understand, no matter how big your trouble might be, you are not alone.
Reach out for help when you feel like it. There is no shame in admitting that you might not be mentally fine and reach out to friends and family. Talking and sharing can work wonders when it comes to dealing with mental health issues.
If you see someone around you who might be dealing with mental health issues, rather than judging the reasons, try and be there for them. They might not have the strength to motivate themselves, so be there to encourage and motivate them.
The first step towards better mental health is being aware that you are struggling with mental health issues.
Take a pledge to move forward towards a happier you, this World Health Mental Day!
